I was wondering...
When I was little, I saw some Laurel and Hardy and Charly Chaplin movies, which were nice to watch back then, though if I look back, they weren't...well...very funny...I guess...
On the other hand I have to admit that Charles Chaplin was a great, and very funny, person, who just used the medium that was available at the time...if he'd lived today, I think that he would've practiced a whole different branch of comedy...
On to my question now: Does anyone know any GOOD slapstick movies? What I'm looking for is a deeper layer of sorts, something more than: "clumsy guy falls down some stairs...four times in a row"...

Gotta check out Buster Keaton then
haven't really seen any full movies of him yet, just clips so can't really suggest anything.. just give it a try
or perhaps Edward Scissorhands
or Benny & Joon dunno.. better to watch the whole movie prolly, but if u want a preview of the funny slapsticky stuff innit ( it might spoil it a bit though )

You should check the Marx-brothers & The three Stooges although imho Buster Keaton is the king, I saw one of his movies ( can't remember wich one ) when I was still in school in the filmmuseum in Antwerp, it was accompanied by a live pianist & violinist wich gave it that extra oldskool-dimension, it was awesome !! But nowadays there is little real slapstick comedy, nowadays its all Rowan Atkinson, Mel Brooks & Farrely Brothers type of things, wich to me ain't the same, it doesn't have the "magic" of the oldskool vaudeville-type of acts.... Benny & Joon is the only "modern-time" slapstick, I can think of ...

you got a point there with Rowan Atkinson hehe (Mr.Bean )
modern slapstick for me : -Police Academy / Naked Gun / Hot Shots -Jackass and likewise things
though i think edward scissorhands kinda is a slapstick-character as well
*edit* Fawlty Towers also has a slapstick-edge to it

Ok, this one is not my cup of tea, I'm not a big fan of most Slapstick stuff so my opinion wont tell you much, but I guess if you like this type of movies, this one is a must see
