This 1964 Japanese movie consists of four separate stories, all old Japanese folk tales ('Kaidan' is Japanese for 'Ghost Story'). Although often classified as horror, these stories are not the gory, sensational kind, but rather build a slow, suspenseful, almost poetic atmosphere. The use of colour, lighting, and sets give the tales a fairytale-like feel, which is enhanced by the fact that all of them are set in medieval Japan. Beautiful!
