- What is KINO?
Kino started in Montreal on January 1999 with a simple bet between friends: produce an original short film every month until the New Millennium and the End of the World. Twelve months later, these friends were disappointed to learn that the Apocalypse had been postponed, but they had kept their bet and 200 short films later, KINO was born!
Inspired by kinè, a Greek word meaning “movement,” KINO is Independence and Freedom of Expression. Its mission is to gather all artists who believe that the importance of a cinematographic work does not rest solely on the amount of its production budget. Its motto - “Do well with nothing, do better with little and do it now!”
A WORLDWIDE NETWORK
In 2001, at the invitation of the Festival du Nouveau Cinema, KINO organizes its first Kabaret. The following summer, Kinoites from Montréal and Québec City recreate this magical formula in Europe and the spirit of Kino is embraced in Hamburg, Kracow, St-Petersburg and Helsinki.
The enthusiasm is contagious and Kino chapters begin popping up all over. From Brussels to Berlin, from Manchester to Mauritius… Kino spreads like wildfire! Today there are over 50 cells in 14 countries on 4 continents.
Driven by a spirit of sharing and a refreshing absence of competition, Kino sees itself as an experimental laboratory and a launching pad for all those who refuse to take the “traditional” production route. Paris siteBelgium siteThe way it works is by monthly projections with mainly amateurs short movies No other rules | |
