- Eastern Promises is a 2007 Canadian drama/thriller feature film directed by David Cronenberg. The screenplay was by Dirty Pretty Things writer Steven Knight. The film tells of a British midwife's interactions with the Russian mafia in London and stars Viggo Mortensen and Naomi Watts. Principal photography began November 2006, in locations in and around London. The film has been noted for its unexpected plot twist and for its violence and realistic depiction of the Russian criminal underworld, including its use of tattoos.
The film premiered September 8, 2007 at the Toronto International Film Festival and went on general release in North America on September 21, 2007. The film was released in the United Kingdom on October 26, 2007. As of January 31, 2008, the film has grossed $51,202,291 worldwide and has received a positive critical reception, appearing on several U.S. critics' "top ten films" lists for 2007. Eastern Promises has won several awards, including the Audience Prize for best film at the Toronto International Film Festival and the Best Actor award for Mortensen at the 2007 British Independent Film Awards. The film received twelve Genie Award nominations, three Golden Globe Award nominations, and Mortensen was nominated for Best Actor at the 80th Academy Awards, losing to Daniel Day Lewis. Great movie, great acting. The Russian mob actually speaks Russian from time to time. Really one to watch!

| I watched it yesterday It is much better than History of violence, but that's easy cause I really didn't like his previous movie One of the fight scene in Eastern Promises deserves to be in the topic of the best fight scenes ever For the rest, I thought is was a bit predictable - Spoiler:
I think Cronenberg wanted to surprise us with the true identity of Nikolai which is revealed about 3 quarters of the movie but I think this was predictable from start, so no real surprises for me.
The true strong point of this movie is the violence which is displayed Cronenberg's style, true to himself That was very good. The acting is also very good (love Vincent Cassel ), although the caracters are a bit cliche. Some things also didn't really make too much sense to me: - Spoiler:
for example, the big mafia boss is asking Nikolai to get rid of Anna's oncle: why only him?? He knew Anna and the other woman knew too much too!!! That doesn't make much sense!!!
Also the all language thing was not very believable: Are they Russian or english??? It would have been much more realistic to do the all thing almost fully in Russian cause that confused me And also didn't really like the end, a bit unfinished and flat... Overall, I must say, I'm not sure I'm really entousiast about the new direction Cronenberg is taking. It is too conventional, I'm missing the dark, weird and strange aspects of his other movies - Spoiler:
If Cronenberg would have made this movie 10 years ago, Kirill would have dropped that baby in the water or cut his head in the hospital, he would be dead and also all the caracters would have been more weird So overall, I give it
